East Boston’s Building Boom Continues: New 41-Unit Project + a Park Coming to Maverick Street

Construction is underway at 9 McKay Place, where a five-story, 41-unit apartment building is taking shape just a few blocks from Maverick Square.

According to the Boston Business Journal, this project was approved in late October and will include a 2,200-square-foot public park fronting Maverick Street, a 1,200-square-foot commercial space for a future neighborhood business, and a rooftop garden with skyline views of Boston. The design comes from Zephyr Architects of Boston, and a Rhode Island–based LLC, is leading the development. Three smaller multifamily homes were demolished to make way for the project.

The apartments at 9 McKay Place will join a growing cluster of new housing developments reshaping East Boston. Among them: 170 apartments at 355 Bennington St. in Day Square, 29 units at 7–11 Curtis St., and 26 apartments at 28–30 Geneva St. On the horizon are several more recently approved or proposed projects — including 94 units at 135 Bremen St., 36 at 62–66 Condor St., 28 at 1214 Bennington St., and 24 at 261 Maverick St.

And it’s not just housing on the rise. A 123-room Cambria Hotel inside a renovated warehouse at 155 Porter St. is nearing completion, with bookings expected to begin April 1.
