Sumner Tunnel Closure

East Boston residents and commuters brace themselves for the most disruptive construction project the city has seen in years—the Sumner Tunnel closure. From July 5th – August 5th, the tunnel will be closed 24/7 for much-needed restoration work on its 88-year-old structure.  75% of the tunnel’s ceiling has been removed, new lighting has been installed, and new security cameras have been installed.  Additionally, there have been upgrades to the computer system, new pumps that remove rainwater from the tunnel, plus new fireproof wall panels. You can read more here.  To survive the tunnel closure, officials urge drivers to ditch their cars and explore alternative transportation options. Here’s a comprehensive guide to navigating East Boston during the closure. You can check it out here!
