This Memorial Day weekend, East Boston and Chelsea are teaming up to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Battle of Chelsea Creek—a pivotal yet often overlooked moment in Revolutionary War history. The celebration, taking place on Saturday, May 24, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Port Park (99 Marginal St, Chelsea), promises a day filled with history, community, and waterfront fun.

One of the main attractions is the return of the historic 1894 schooner, SSV Ernestina-Morrissey, courtesy of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy. Visitors can step aboard and learn about the HMS Diana—the first British warship captured and destroyed by American forces during the Revolutionary War, right here in Chelsea Creek.

The event will feature Revolutionary-era militia encampments, musket and artillery demonstrations, and a rare public viewing of the original cannon taken from the HMS Diana. Families can enjoy colonial games, a balloon artist, and a historical schoolmaster station for the kids.

Foodies, take note: local favorites like Tawakal Halal Café, Bella Isla Express, and Antojitos Latinos will be on-site, along with a beer garden hosted by Bent Water Brewing.

This celebration is part of the statewide Massachusetts 250 initiative, honoring the events that shaped our nation. It’s a unique opportunity to connect with our shared history and enjoy a festive day by the water.
