Atlantic Works Gallery Brings the Festive Weirdness with “Jingle Bells, Batman Smells”

This cheeky holiday-themed show dives headfirst into the chaos and kitsch of Christmas in the 21st century. Expect photography, installation art, conceptual creations, and quirky objects from Eric’s eccentric holiday collection. If “Objects are great!!!” speaks to your holiday spirit, this one’s for you.

The opening reception on Saturday, December 7th, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., promises to be an unforgettable evening. Don’t miss the star of the night: a mischievous 6-foot living Christmas Duck, inspired by one of Eric’s most beloved (and hilariously creepy) holiday ornaments. This naughty-but-nice quacker will steal the show with its antics. Guests can also step into an awkwardly fabulous holiday scene at a portrait station inspired by Awkward Family Christmas Photos. Tacky sweaters and turtlenecks provided—because who doesn’t love a little festive fashion chaos?

Eric Hess, an Eastie-based photographer since 1999 and founding member of Atlantic Works Gallery, brings his personal history and flair to this exhibit. His love for the strange and joyful elements of the holidays began as a child, thanks to his father’s yearly transformation into a glitter-loving Christmas enthusiast. Eric dedicates this show to his father, who inspired his enduring fascination with the season’s quirky magic.

In true East Boston community spirit, Atlantic Works is partnering with Eastie Elves to collect unwrapped toys for neighborhood kids. Visitors are encouraged to bring donations when they stop by the gallery. Plus, homeowners are invited to enter the East Boston Holiday Decoration Contest! To participate, email Eric Hess at [email protected] by December 9th. Winners will be announced at the gallery’s Third Thursday reception on December 19th, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. and featured on Atlantic Works’ social media.
