On Wednesday, August 7, 2025, officers assigned to District A-7 (East Boston) arrested 37-year-old Eric Vargas of East Boston on charges of Assault and Battery with a Dangerous Weapon, stemming from an incident that occurred the previous day.

At approximately 11:30 AM on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, a victim entered the District A-7 station and reported that he had been attacked by a man with a hammer earlier that morning. According to the victim, at about 6:30 AM, he was entering a bakery located at 40 Maverick Square when an unknown male approached and asked to use his cellphone. After informing the suspect that he did not have one, the victim proceeded into the bakery. Upon exiting and walking toward his vehicle, the suspect allegedly struck the victim in the head with a hammer.

The victim sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was treated at a nearby health center.

District A-7 detectives launched an immediate investigation and were able to obtain and disseminate images of the suspect. Officers quickly identified the individual as Eric Vargas of East Boston.

At approximately 5:16 PM on Wednesday, August 7, 2025, officers on patrol in East Boston located Vargas sitting on the steps of a building on Paris Street. After further investigation, Vargas was placed under arrest.

He is expected to be arraigned in East Boston District Court on one count of Assault and Battery with a Dangerous Weapon (Hammer).
