A sinkhole formed on the Byron Street Bridge in East Boston on Monday evening, prompting a temporary suspension of MBTA Blue Line service between Airport and Suffolk Downs stations. The incident occurred around 5:10 p.m., with officials responding promptly to assess the situation.
To accommodate commuters during the disruption, shuttle buses were deployed between the affected stations. By 6:40 p.m., after inspections and a successful test train run, regular train service resumed, albeit at reduced speeds between Wood Island and Orient Heights stations as repairs continued.
No injuries were reported, and the MBTA has not specified the cause of the sinkhole. The bridge remains under evaluation to ensure safety and prevent future incidents.Â
A 311 report to the city of Boston included a photo of a hole in the pavement on a bridge by the intersection of Byron Street and Cowper Street.
Be safe out there!
