Pickup Truck Crashes Into Eastie Home, Driver Seriously Injured

A little past midnight on Wednesday, things got intense at the corner of Chelsea and Emmons Streets in East Boston. A pickup truck lost control and smashed straight into the front of a multi-family home, landing the driver in serious condition and waking up the whole block.

According to the Boston Fire Department, the truck ended up wedged between a utility pole and the building, with the driver trapped inside. Firefighters were called in for a technical rescue and worked quickly to safely get the person out using cables to pull the mangled vehicle away from the structure.

Deputy Fire Chief Martin McCormick said the impact was so severe that four residents inside the home had to be evacuated. The building sustained significant structural damage, and fire crews had to deploy a special “collapse unit” to shore up three areas of concern before anyone could even think about stepping back inside.

City engineers will now determine whether the building is safe going forward. In the meantime, the displaced residents are being assisted, and the driver is being treated for serious injuries.
