Neighbors on Webster Street got quite the scare in the early hours of Wednesday morning after part of a building under renovation partially collapsed. Just after 1 a.m., a massive hole near the top floor of 57 Webster Street opened up, prompting a quick response from the Boston Fire Department.
Thankfully, no one was inside the building at the time, and no injuries were reported. Residents in a neighboring building were temporarily evacuated as a safety precaution, but have since been allowed to return.
The cause of the collapse is still unknown. According to NBC10 Boston, the structure, a multi-family home listed as a four-bed, four-bath, 2,700-square-foot property, was undergoing renovations when the incident occurred.
Webster Street remains shut down between Orleans and Cottage Streets while officials assess the damage and begin cleanup. The city’s building inspector has been called in to investigate.
