Heads Up, Eastie: BPD Warn Residents About ATM Skimming Scam

East Boston residents are being urged to keep an eye out when using ATMs and payment terminals after a skimming device and hidden camera were discovered on an ATM inside the CVS on Border Street.
According to WCVB, the device was found on a standalone Santander ATM inside the CVS at 210 Border Street. Boston Police say the skimmer was attached sometime between June 5 and June 6 and was designed to steal card information and PIN numbers from unsuspecting customers.
Police say victims reported that the card slot felt tighter than usual, and parts of the machine appeared to be made from different materials than the rest of the ATM. Investigators also found evidence of a hidden pinhole camera that may have been used to record PIN numbers.
The Boston Police Department is reminding residents to inspect ATMs and payment terminals before using them. Loose parts, missing decals, unusual stickers, raised keypads, and small holes near card readers can all be signs of tampering. Whenever possible, police recommend using contactless payment methods or credit cards instead of debit cards.
If you notice suspicious activity on your account, contact your bank immediately, deactivate the affected card, and report the incident to police.
