UPDATE: We are sad to report that Jimmy Donnelly has passed away.
On Friday morning, Mayor Marty Walsh, along with city officials, named the parking garage at City Hall after a loved and cherished employee and son of South Boston, Jimmy Donnelly, 42.
Donnelly is battling a terminal illness and friends and family have been visiting him around the clock at Mass General Hospital. The mayor himself stopped by this week.
The Boston Globe wrote of feature on Donnelly highlighting the friendships he made and the lives he touched working at the garage. He is the most popular person at City Hall.
In a post on twitter Friday morning, Mayor Walsh wrote, “Anyone who’s passed through the City Hall garage knows him. He’s the heart of the City Hall, a friend to all and the definition of a public servant.”
A bright blue sign with white letter now reads, “Jimmy Donnelly Garage.”
