At about 10:36 PM, on Wednesday, June 19th, 2024, Officers assigned to District A-7 (East Boston) recovered a firearm and arrested Ivan Ortiz, 27, of East Boston, after responding to a radio call for a gathering causing a disturbance around Libson St. and Msgr. Jaccobbe Rd.

Officers responded to the area and observed a group of people and several empty alcohol containers near them. As Officers approached and were visible to the group, they began to disperse. While the group was dispersing, the attention of Officers was drawn to one individual who separated himself from the others at a fast pace while clutching onto a fanny pack strapped across his chest.

Officers started to follow this individual and he started sprinting onto London St. while clutching onto his fanny pack until he fell near the Maverick Project Homes on Sumner St. After a brief struggle, Officers were able to place him into custody and investigate. After investigating, Officers identified the suspect as Ivan Ortiz and recovered a firearm that was located inside his fanny pack.

A-7 Detectives responded and identified the firearm as a Glock 17 with an obliterated serial number, and a high-capacity magazine holding nine 9mm. rounds of ammunition.

Ivan Ortiz was arrested and is expected to be arraigned in East Boston District Court for the charges of Unlawful Possession of a Large Capacity Firearm, Carrying a Firearm without a License, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, Possession of a Firearm with an Obliterated Serial Number, and Resisting Arrest.
