Blue Line Breakdown Traps Hundreds Under Boston Harbor
Yikes! Tuesday afternoon turned into a commuter nightmare when a Blue Line train got stuck in the tunnel beneath Boston Harbor, leaving hundreds stranded underground. According to the MBTA, a downed communications wire between Aquarium and Maverick stations caused a sudden power outage around 2:30 p.m.
Roughly 465 riders were walked out of the tunnel by crews from the Boston Fire Department, Transit Police, and MBTA personnel. BFD reported evacuating closer to 500 passengers, with the operation taking about an hour. Thankfully, no injuries were reported, but the train remains in the tunnel as of now.
Shortly after 3 p.m., the MBTA announced that shuttle buses would replace train service between Government Center and Airport stations due to the ongoing signal issue. Heads up: Bowdoin station is not being serviced by the shuttle.
