Whether it’s in life or in a book, starting a new chapter can be exciting, nerve wracking and surprising all at the same time.
After turning the page and moving across the country, Nicky Figueroa struggled to find immediate connections in her new city. While she found comfort in Eastie Gals, a meetup group for local girls to get together, she saw a need for fellow book lovers – an area focused book club.
She took matters into her own hands with the help of her fellow administrator, Jenna Keegan, earlier this summer and formed Eastie Book Babes with the goal of bringing people together to form genuine connections. With 130 members on the BookClubs platform and over 330 followers on Instagram after only four months, it’s safe to say that Figueroa and Keegan started something that others had been looking for – in more ways than one.
“A lot of people are in my shoes, having relocated for family or work or school,” Figueroa said. “At the last couple meetings, people have expressed how [EBB] has been helpful to them. It’s a way to meet like-minded people and have that shared experience of talking about a book or talking about what’s happening in the community.”
They meet once a month for around two hours filled with socializing, eating, discussion and more. Figueroa likes to look at it as “a nice evening in the company of girlfriends, engaging in meaningful conversations about the themes of the book!”
As for where the hanging out takes place, that depends! They alternate between members’ houses, community spots and different small businesses to help support their local restaurants and shops. The past two months they hosted at Downeast Cider House.
Previous books chosen include The Women by Kristin Hannah, Beautyland by Marie-Helene Bertino, Silver Nitrate by Silvia Moreno-Garcia and Just For The Summer by Abby Jimenez.
To choose the next book, all you have to do is volunteer to host the meeting! Other responsibilities include choosing and decorating the venue, providing a main dish and getting to lead the discussion. The great thing about different people choosing the book each month is it introduces new genres to those who might not have read that kind of book otherwise.
If you are interested in joining next month’s discussion, the quickest way to do so is by signing up with BookClubs here. Then, be sure to follow Eastie Book Babes via their website or social media @EastieBookBabes on Instagram, Facebook or WhatsApp to stay up to date on meetings, social gatherings, other members and more.
